Feeling stressed or burned out?
Get outside.
Psychologists Stephen Kaplan & Rachel Kaplan, developed the Attention Restoration Theory (ART) which posits that your attentional capacities are often fatigued by the demands of daily life, particularly in urban & overstimulating settings.
ART identifies two types of attention:
1. Directed Attention: This is the focused attention you use to concentrate on tasks, which can become fatigued over time due to constant demand & distractions.
2. Involuntary Attention: This is a more effortless form of attention that is naturally drawn to interesting stimuli, often found in nature (like the rustling of leaves or a flowing river).
The theory argues that natural environments provide opportunities for involuntary attention, allowing you to recover from mental fatigue.
This can lead to improved concentration, creativity & overall cognitive function.
The calming & soothing aspects of nature help to rejuvenate your mind, making it easier to regain focus & manage stress.
My love & I enjoyed a 6.5km walk through the rolling hills of Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park, just outside the city.
Have you been there?
