If you’ve had any abdominal surgery or trauma, your ‘transverse abdominus’ may not be firing. This is one of the four abdominal muscles and it’s critical for a flat belly and pain free movement. If your transverse muscle is weak or underdeveloped, you may experience back pain, especially while doing planking movements like push ups. Your posture will suffer and your belly will protrude when you have a weak transverse muscle.
