Never Grow Old

dan ritchie me may 2013This is Dr Dan Ritchie and me. We’re on the set in Lapeer, MI where we filmed all the videos for Functional Fitness.

These videos were a little different for me to film. I was the ‘doer’ in each video instead of doing any of the coaching and I learned A LOT from both Dr. Dan and Dr. Cody Sipes.

The good doctors are experts in fitness specializing in mature clients. There are many considerations when dealing with the mature client.

Although chronologically I would be considered ‘mature’ at age 50,  I don’t necessarily fall into the ‘normal’ category. It was great to see how these guys put their program together to take a client from sedentary state to advanced. The progressions are really fantastic.

If you are:

  • new to fitness
  • recovering from an injury
  • 50+ and need a ‘gentle’ approach
  • looking for ‘follow along’ videos
  • need ‘coaching’ along the way

Functional Fitness is a great fit. Start with this and you’ll be doing my Challenge Complex Olympic Edition in no time 😉

Here’s an article from Dr. Dan that’s a good read:

The Plasticity of Aging

By Dr. Dan Ritchie

Co-Author of Functional Fitness

It is all true and the research on the plasticity of aging overwhelmingly supports this statement. The plasticity of aging refers to the fact that the aging process is not a one-way ticket to disability.

You may have heard the statement “the horse is out of the barn”.  This is a common perception about aging that means that once you are older you can’t really do anything to improve your health and fitness.  Basically, it’s too late.  You missed your chance.  I know many people used to think that when they turned 30!  Ha…then it was 40 now your finished.   Then people started coming up with 50 is the new 30 and 60 is the new 40.   The reality is over 40 doesn’t mean all your youth, vitality and being in that great shape of your youth has to be lost forever.

“Over the hill”

“One foot in the grave”

“You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”

Yeah, you’ve heard it all before…but it’s not true.aging 2

Did you know that, at any age, you can:

  • Get larger, stronger muscles
  • Significantly improve your cardiovascular endurance
  • Improve your joint flexibility
  • Improve your coordination
  • Become faster
  • Become more powerful

The body can, and will improve and get better IF you train it properly and follow a good nutritional plan.

It is all true and the research on the plasticity of aging overwhelmingly supports this statement. The plasticity of aging refers to the fact that the aging process is not a one-way ticket to disability.

It really is never too late to start.  A classic study by Tufts University in the early 90’s showed that even nursing home residents (ages 90-100) can significantly improve their strength and fitness with an exercise program.

Don’t believe the myths and stereotypes that you shouldn’t start an exercise program because it is too late for you.  It isn’t.

But, of course, the flip-side is that although it is never too late to start, the sooner you start the better.

This program will take you from spectator to player and beyond.

I sometimes provide programs that are too aggressive for some of my readers. I’ve been getting a ton of emails that indicate that an ‘entry level’ program is much needed, so here it is.
