How to Collapse Time to Reach Your Goals

I know the title of this blog post sounds strange…Let me explain…

If you want to go from A to B faster, one way is to collapse the time it takes to make the journey  and the fastest way I know how to get somewhere is to get a clear road map.

➡ Wait! Let me back up.

Actually, the first thing that needs to happen is that you need to know where ‘B’ is…You need to know where you want to go or what you want to accomplish. This would be akin to getting clear on your goal, setting your goal or figuring out what you would really love.

Next, you need to get direction on how to get from A to B.

Experience tells most of us that we can possibly figure this direction out by ourselves, but it often takes a LONG time to accomplish most goals and many of us find that we get lost along the way. Have you ever stalled out? Got delayed? Never finished what you set out to do?

Now for me, why would I re-invent the wheel figuring out my own way when there’s often a road map already created?

Let me tell you about a recent experience to illustrate this point.

My son Sam decided to enter a power lifting event. He’d been training with weights for a few years and thought it would be fun. He asked my daughter, Hannah to join him. She’s an Olympic lifter.

✳Fun fact: power lifting is MUCH different than Olympic lifting. Power lifting consists of three lifts: the squat, the bench press and the dead lift. Olympic lifting includes two lifts: the snatch and the clean and jerk.

In any case, the kids asked me to join them and power lifting soon became a family affair.

Even though the three of us had a TON of lifting experience, we knew that to do our best, we needed more guidance.

What did we do? We hired a coach.

Coach Barrett’s outside eyes literally deconstructed each of our lifts, built them back up and then he provided a training program to follow. He met with us, encouraged us, kicked our butts and stood by us at the event.

😐 Not so fun fact: Sam broke his foot three days before the event so he was unable to compete. I was SO proud of this kid who showed up with a great attitude supporting his sister and Mom. This was likely no easy task dealing with his own disappointment but he handled it like a champ. As a Mom, this is the biggest win for me knowing that I raised a stand up son. He was truly happy for us and that shows a lot of character.

Now aside from getting a coach to collapse time here’s another lesson…It’s about the 10,000 hour rule which basically says that it takes 10,000 hours for mastering a skill.

Now, I have NOT mastered the skills required to be a great power lifter, but the experience and time both Hannah and I put in training and nourishing our bodies with healthy food BEFORE we ever decided to power lift paid off.

I ‘officially’ trained for 5 weeks for my first power lifting event (and I can’t thank my coach enough for all his help), but in reality, I’ve been ‘unofficially’ lifting and eating healthily for pretty much all my adult life…

Turns out this strategy goes a long way.

I’m not typically one to chest beat, but here’s the lowdown on my 1st power lifting event:
✅broke a national record in the squat…
✅broke a world record in the bench press…
✅broke a world record in the deadlift…
broke a world record total…
won best master lifter…
✅won best female bench press (this was cool because it was awarded on strength and not age!)…
✅ I got the honor of peeing in a cup (in other words, I got drug tested) 😉

Fun fact: Hannah broke a world record in the squat and won best lifter 24 & under…

These records are with the 100% Raw Federation which is strictly drug tested and no supportive gear is allowed…

Consistent effort (with anything) over the long run brings about pleasant surprises 😳
