5 Inexpensive Supplements for Women Over 40

There are a ton of powders, pills and potions all over that promise you the moon, but do they really work?

Here’s a quick video I did sharing the supplements that I use on the regular:

In a nutshell, here are the supplements that I use:

Apple Cider Vinegar

No, this isn’t really a supplement. but I use it every day without fail so I included it in the list. The benefits of it’s use are numerous and it’s inexpensive but, yes, it’s a little on the disgusting side 😝 I down it every morning just the same.

Here are some of the benefits:

  • Improves digestion

  • Restores your body’s natural pH

  • Decreases inflammation

  • Increases energy

  • Improve liver function

  • It contains potassium, pectin, malic acid, and calcium

  • Contains raw enzymes and gut-friendly bacteria that are good for your body

  • Make sure to buy ORGANIC ACV. The ‘mother load’ (or the cloudy stuff at the bottom of the botte) is where all the goodness is, so make sure to shake it up.

High Quality Protein Powder

I use Biotrust protein every morning in my shake (you can learn more about it here). Admittedly, Biotrust a little more expensive that some other protein powders but that’s because of it’s quality, digest-ability and flavour.

Trust me, I’ve tried some disgusting powders that don’t mix well, taste disgusting and give you gas and stomach issues if you can manage to swallow them. Many protein powders are filled with fillers and protein that your body can’t digest at all. Buying lower quality protein that I have to choke down, can’t digest and doesn’t deliver the protein that I need is a waste of money.

Here’s why I use protein powder:

  • I include protein at every meal, including breakfast and I’m not a big egg fan day in and day out.
  • Protein powder is useful for a quick and easy morning shake to boost my protein intake.
  • Protein stabilizes blood sugar so I don’t have swings in insulin production. It’s important to note that NO fat loss can occur in the presence of insulin, so I want to keep my insulin levels from spiking.
  • Protein satiates so that I feel full longer.
  • Biotrust protein has no artificial colours, sweeteners or flavours. It’s important to me to stay away from the artificial sweeteners particularly.
  • Biotrust protein is a time-released protein blend.
  • I know the owners of this company so I’m very confident of it’s quality.

Organifi Green Juice

I like to eat a ton of greens during the day, but there’s only so much time in the  day to get in all the nutrition I need. I could eat vegetables all day long and still be lacking. My green juice is sort of insurance and I swear that I feel more energized when I take it.

Now when drunk alone, the green juice is pretty tasty, but to be honest, I throw it in my apple cider vinegar so let’s just say that no one fights over my green juice in the morning 😉 You can learn more about Organifi green juice here.

The benefits of Organifi are that it:

  • Naturally balances hormones
  • Alkalizes the body
  • Helps relieve stress
  • Boosts immunity
  • Boosts energy and mental clarity
  • No artificial fillers, additives or ingredients of any sort
  • I know the owners of this company as well and trust them implicitly

Natural Psyllium Husks

Again, this isn’t really a supplement, but I’ve been taking it for years so I thought I’d include it.

I throw it in my green drink in the morning. It has no taste but you need to swill down the drink quickly because it bulks up when in contact with liquid, so unless you want to drink of glob of goo, drink fast! 😛

Here are the many benefits of psyllium:

  • It’s a natural and gentle laxative that keeps you as regular as clockwork
  • It’s a natural pre-biotic – this means it helps good bacteria grow in the digestive system to boost immune function
  • Helps fight infection
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Helps maintain healthy tissue and cells
  • Manages cholesterol levels
  • Maintains a feeling of satiety or fullness
  • Helps control blood sugar

Liposomal Maca

This is the new kid on the block of supplements for me. I have recently started using this to support hormone balance and I’m seeing results right away. I’ll keep you posted on long term results. You can learn more here.

Here are the benefits of liposomal maca:

  • Increases fat loss
  • Gives more energy & stamina
  • Decreases PMS & menopause symptoms
  • Boosts libido
  • Lowers inflammation
  • Fights depression
  • Helps with fertility
  • Increases bone density
  • Helps provide deeper & more restful sleep
  • Helps your body adapt to stress

And that’s honestly it for supplements.

In the winter, I take Vitamin D daily, but as long as I’m getting 10 minutes outside with arms and legs exposed, then I get my Vitamin D fix naturally from the sun.

Sometimes I take pro-biotics, especially if I’ve had to take a course of anti-biotics.

Sometimes I’ll take melatonin or magnesium as a sleep aid.

I’ve tried the other odd supplement here and there, but these ones listed are the ones that I’ve been sticking to lately.

My point is that in order to look and feel great, your consistent healthy lifestyle is going to go a lot further than anything you can find in a bottle. Consistent healthy eating, lots of water and short, sweaty workouts are going to help you feel energized and looking your best.

By the way, if you’re a woman over 40, the workouts at this link are a great start to lose your menopause belly.
